Ocean Sunrise
Written by Sandy McCann
As I made my way down the wooden steps that led to the soft, white sand I found myself carefully placing my feet and toes on the wood to avoid getting a splinter.
It was early morning and I stepped out onto the sand. It was pure white like powdered sugar and a little damp from last night’s gentle rain. I made my way down to the edge of the water where I could watch the sun rise up from the horizon. Tiny beams of light skittered across the water as the waves gently rolled toward me. It was a wonderful, peaceful and calming site.
The light breeze that blew in toward the shore caressed my face, hands, legs and toes. My toes dug into the loose wet sand at the water’s edge. I noticed a few seagulls skirting along the wet sand. They created tiny, crisscross foot print tracks. Using my imagination, I thought maybe I should follow the tracks like a map and see where it leads. The trail of these tiny marks led back into the water and disappeared under a newly arrived wave.
I thought to myself, maybe I should leave my own impression in the sand. So, I lunged into a turn dragging my foot like a compass. I had made a huge complete circle in the sand. I laughed to think if someone looked at my circle and would wonder how that shape was made.
I walked out into the water until it was about 3 inches deep. It was cool and refreshing. It tickled my ankles. I walked and kicked the water splashing droplets ahead of me. I watched the pattern that the droplets made on the water’s surface.
The sound of the ocean coming in and going out and the gentle breeze made for a peaceful moment. I shall recall this place when I need a bit of calm in my hectic life.
Now relax and practice your mindful breathing thinking of the rise and fall of the ocean.
